Figures and Birds

As I grapple with the Climate Emergency and the changes I notice in nature I have made these figures and birds. They are an external manifestation of my internal thoughts and fears…and hopes. The figures are fearful, loving, fragile and quietly angered. They are not planned beforehand…I begin, and they slowly emerge instinctively.

I use discarded pieces of wood, metal, objects, fabrics and a variety of found materials as such materials have a ‘life’ about them already, a history which can be physical seen and touched and which adds a richness to my work. I love working with such materials, it often feels like Alchemy and by adding in family objects and things collected more depth and meaning is created. I also literally want to recycle, to make potent artwork out of discarded and used items and sometimes I dismantle older work and incorporate it in the new. I believe they reflect how many of us are trying to piece things together, make sense of things how we are often making things up as we go along

My work explores fragility and vulnerability and evokes a sense of things being out of kilter and unbalanced…things toppling.
